Legal group seeks comments on Uniform Civil Code

Previously, the 21st Legal Committee, whose term expired in August 2018, had twice reviewed the politically sensitive issues of the UCC and sought input from all stakeholders

New Delhi: The Law Commission said on Wednesday it had decided to review the need to revisit the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and seek input from various stakeholders, including the public and religious organisations.

Earlier, the 21st Legal Committee, whose term expired in August 2018, twice reviewed the issue and sought input from all stakeholders on politically sensitive matters of the UCC.

This was followed by a consultation paper on Family Law Reform in 2018. The court issued an order on the matter and India’s 22nd Law Commission considered it expedient to revisit the matter,” the panel said in a statement.

The 22nd Law Commission, recently extended for three years, accordingly began examining issues related to UCC based on references sent by the Ministry of Law and Justice. “Therefore, the 22nd Law Commission of India has decided to once again seek the views and thoughts of the general public and recognized religious organizations on the Uniform Civil Code,” the statement said.

Interested and willing persons may submit comments within 30 days from the date of notification to the Legal Committee.
