Calcutta: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had called Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister MK Stalin to discuss the role of governors in the country’s various opposition-ruled states.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister himself had informed Mamata Banerjee via Twitter message on Wednesday to call him on this particular issue.

“Hon WB CM & MamataOfficial spoke to me on the phone, expressing her solidarity and admiration for our initiative against the undemocratic operation of the governors of states ruled by the non-PJP, and recommending that all opposition CMs meet to decide on the next course of action,” Stalin tweeted The message has been read.

Mamata Banerjee’s phone conversation with MK Stalin comes as West Bengal’s Raj Bhavan-State Secretariat tiff reaches new heights on various issues. The latest incidents are clashes in some parts of the state over Ram Navami and surprise visits by Governor CV Ananda Bose to different universities.

On April 14, State Education Secretary Basu launched a scathing attack on the governor’s recent investigative visits to various state universities.

“The way the Governor roams like a white elephant between different universities is unrealistic, inappropriate or out of norm. We have never shown any arrogance towards the new Governor. We want to work with him. But he is abusing One’s own power, time and time again surpassing one’s limits,” Basu told the media that day. The minister also questioned the governor’s power to approve funding for universities.

“The funding announced by the governor will come from the state coffers. How can he make such an announcement without consulting the education department?” Basu asked.

Earlier, the Trinamool Congress also did not take lightly the Governor General’s decision to review Hanuman Jayanti’s security arrangements, with party spokesman Kunal Ghosh mocking the Governor General on the issue.
