Imphal: Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Saturday urged women in the state to refrain from blocking security forces on the road.

Yuki appealed for peace, deeply shocked and dismayed by the ongoing ethnic conflict.

The governor’s statement came after troops reported several road blockades in the conflict-torn state during a security operation.

“I further appeal from the bottom of my heart, especially mothers and sisters, not to stop the security forces on the road as they fulfill their responsibility to keep the people of the country safe,” she said.

“The most important thing is that everyone should not believe in spreading baseless rumors and should do their best to stop them. All problems can and should be resolved through peaceful dialogue to restore the peaceful atmosphere of the country in the past.”

The governor said thousands of people have been displaced since the clashes broke out on May 3 and have taken shelter in different relief camps.

In addition, numerous homes were set on fire and property was lost and damaged in both neighborhoods, she said.

“I strongly condemn this inhumane act. As a result of these unbelievable events, rice cultivation, the backbone of the country’s economy, has been adversely affected as growers are unable to work in their fields without fear.”

“I sincerely appeal to all, regardless of caste, creed and religion, to give their fullest cooperation to resolve issues through friendly and peaceful dialogue in order to maintain our age-old tradition of coexistence,” she said. Pillars of adolescents and children are adversely affected.

“Dear citizens of Manipur, in conclusion, I once again appeal to you to live in peace in the days to come,” she said in the statement.
