Angels: The official trailer for Barbie begins with the now-iconic actress Margot Robbie taking off her high heels to reveal her bare feet are still arched, and it took the Hollywood star eight takes to get make it happen.
As Time magazine’s new cover story about the making of Barbie reveals: “This shot took eight takes. (Margot Robbie) had to grab a bar to keep her feet flexed, “Variety” reported.
“I don’t really like people doing my hands or feet in insert shots,” she said.
Robbie also told TIME that she would have turned down Barbie if Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s script didn’t incorporate many different Barbie characters.
Variety reports that Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma McKee, Harry Neff, Dua Lipa and more are also in the Warner Bros. blockbuster. Play as a Barbie doll.
“If (Mattel) hadn’t made this change to have multiple Barbies, I don’t think I would have wanted to try and make a Barbie movie,” Robbie said.
“I don’t think you should be saying, ‘This is the only version of Barbie, and this is how women should aspire to look, look, and act.'”
Robbie told Vogue last month that she also enlisted Gal Gadot to play Barbie in the film because she felt the Wonder Woman actor embodies “the energy of Barbie.”
What exactly is Barbie Energy?
“Gal Gadot is Barbie’s energy,” says Robbie.
“Because Gal Gadot is so beautiful, but you don’t hate her because she’s so beautiful, because she’s so genuine, she’s so warm and kind, it’s almost stupid. Like before being a fool.”
Robbie also had to grapple with questions about beauty and sex appeal while playing the leading role of a Barbie doll. After all, Barbie dolls are children’s dolls.
“I thought, ‘Well, she’s a doll. She’s a plastic doll. She doesn’t have organs. If she doesn’t have organs, she doesn’t have reproductive organs. If she doesn’t have reproductive organs, will she still have sex? No, I Think she can’t,” Robbie said.
“She’s sexy. But she should never be sexy. People can project sex onto her. Yes, she can wear a short skirt, but because it’s fun and it’s pink. Not because she wants you to see it her ass.”
Warner Bros.’ Barbie opens in theaters nationwide on July 21.
