Many homeowners in Hyderabad are choosing to build container homes on their farms.
Hyderabad: We’ve seen giant shipping containers used for shipping, but ever wondered what it’s like to live in one? Well, owners in Hyderabad are opting to build container homes on their farms so customers can experience what it is like to live inside.
These structures made of steel offer creative and sustainable solutions to modern living. Fargo in Kondamadugu and Little Utopia on Chilkur Road in Moinabad are two such places that have created a space where minimalism meets luxury by offering shipping container homestays.
“Container houses are made of steel structures, usually shipping containers or built from scratch like containers. These rooms are no different from normal rooms – with a bed, sofa, air conditioner and toilet,” said Sai Teja, owner of Little Utopia. One of the most unique things about these container homes is their flexibility and portability, he added.
These units can be easily transported and installed. “The main reasons we build container houses on our farm are that they are durable, have a modern aesthetic, can be installed quickly and most importantly, are mobile,” says Kaushik Ragala, founder of The Fargo.
Containers need adequate insulation and ventilation to ensure comfortable living. “Container homes require regular maintenance to keep them in top condition and ensure a long life – such as regular painting and cleaning,” adds Teja.
Insulation is important to regulate temperature and minimize heat transfer. Proper insulation can help prevent condensation, reduce energy consumption, and improve the overall livability of a container home. “If installed properly, a container house can be used anywhere, regardless of the climate. Since the container is made of metal, it must be properly insulated to insulate it from heat and sound. We typically use three inches of glass wool As insulation,” Kaushik said of the climate control of these container homes.
This type of container provides inherent modularity, making it easy to expand and adapt to changing needs. By strategically combining multiple containers, architects can create larger living spaces or multi-level structures. “One can buy a 20ft x 10ft container in the market for Rs 5-6 lakh. We built container houses in-house,” adds Kaushik.
A standard 20ft x 10ft container house can comfortably accommodate about two to three people.
