Hyderabad: The successful role of the state government’s flagship program Mission Kakatiya in improving ground water tables and providing irrigation and drinking water was once again recognized at the national level.
The latest State and Territory Social Progress Index (SPI) report compiled by the Institute for Competitiveness and Social Progress and presented to the Economic Advisory Council and the Prime Minister, while looking at groundwater levels across states, acknowledged Mission Kakatiya’s role in improving Telangana’s groundwater levels. contribute.
According to the report, only two districts in Telangana, Hyderabad and Rajanaseira, fall under the “overdeveloped” category, while 23 districts fall under the “safe” category.
Moreover, the report acknowledges the proactive steps taken by the Telangana government in raising the water table in the state.
“Under the Kakatiya mission of the Telangana state government, people in various districts are actively participating in water resource management. The mission has empowered local government agencies to implement various programs such as water abstraction and irrigation-based community management in a decentralized manner. In addition, the proposed plan was discussed with villagers and farmers, who were motivated to participate in the process,” the report states.
Haryana (134.56%), Rajasthan (150.22%), Punjab (164.42%) and Delhi (101.40%) are currently at a critical stage as their groundwater withdrawal values exceed 100% and are in “excessive Development” category. Arunachal Pradesh (0.36%), Sikkim (0.86%), Nagaland (1.04%), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (2.6%) and Mizoram (3.81%) are safe , the percentage of groundwater withdrawals is lower than in other regional countries.
In terms of water withdrawal, groundwater resources in more than 110 areas have been over-exploited, that is, the water withdrawal in these areas accounts for more than 100% of the available water. Of these, 17 districts have a water withdrawal rate of more than 200%, of which Jaisalmer (Rajasthan), Sangarur (Punjab), Jalandhar (Punjab) and Jodhpur (Rajasthan) The highest rates were 318.63%, 301.62%, 257.59% and 254.07%. In contrast, 513 districts are in the safe stage of groundwater extraction (70%).
