Hyderabad: More than 1,500 government and local body schools across the state will soon become power centers, installing solar photovoltaic power plants on school premises. In addition to providing quality free education, these schools will promote the use of green energy.

The state government’s move to install solar PV plants will not only reduce electricity bills for schools but also help them generate income. Excess solar energy generated by the school will be diverted to the grid to help generate income.

The solar panels installed at 1,521 schools in 12 districts at a cost of Rs 320 crore will generate a total of 3,072 kilowatts of electricity. The Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) called for tenders to install the solar panels and recently identified 11 suppliers.

A 2KW system costs Rs 79,800 while a 3KW system and a 4 to 10 KW system cost Rs 77,950 and Rs 77,450 respectively.

“A net metering system will be installed in every school. Excess power during holidays will be directly connected to the grid. Schools will be paid accordingly based on the units transferred and the price. Currently, the price of a unit is Rs 4.52 per piece, which is a dynamic Price. We expect to complete works on 60 schools by the end of this month,” said a TSREDCO official.

Schools with more than 200 students have been selected to install solar panels as part of Mana Ooru-Mana Badi, the state government’s flagship program to comprehensively develop and strengthen public school infrastructure.

Among the 11 districts, Mahabubnagar has the highest number of schools with 283 schools that will be powered by solar power, followed by Nizamabad with 145 schools and Ranga Reddy district with 141 schools.

Southern Power Distribution Co., Ltd. has 1,521,916 schools, and Northern Power Distribution Co., Ltd. has 605 schools.

In addition to installing the solar photovoltaic plant, officials have also drawn up plans to erect a solar fence around it so that no damage can be done to the facility due to human intervention or stray cattle.
