More than 4,600 Amarnath pilgrims leave Bhagvatti Nagar base camp

Some 290,000 devotees have visited the Amarnath shrine since the annual pilgrimage began on July 1.

More than 4,600 Amarnath pilgrims leave Bhagvatti Nagar base camp



Jammu,: A group of more than 4,600 Amarnath pilgrims left the Bhagwati Nagar base camp here under heavy security on Thursday morning.

As many as 290,000 devotees have visited the Amarnath shrine since the annual pilgrimage began on July 1.

A total of 4,675 pilgrims made their way to the two base camps in Kashmir in a convoy of 169 vehicles and continued on to the cave shrine of Lord Shiva at an altitude of 3,880 metres.

Officials said the 2,850 pilgrims to Pahagam departed in a convoy of 106 vehicles, while another convoy of 63 vehicles departed at 3.30 am and 3.45 am carrying 1,825 pilgrims to the Baltar base camp.

The 62-day annual pilgrimage to the cave shrine at an altitude of 3,888 meters began on July 1 from Pahagam in Anantnag district and Baltar in Ganderbar district. The pilgrimage is expected to end on August 31.
