Mumbai: Pets help people lead healthy lives and fill emotional deficits that arise from broken relationships, a Mumbai court has heard in a domestic violence case. A woman is seeking maintenance from her estranged husband, saying she has health problems and has three dogs who depend on her.
Metropolitan Magistrate (Bandra Court) Komalsing Rajput, in an interim order passed on June 20, directed the man to pay his 55-year-old estranged wife interim maintenance of Rs 50,000 per month and reject his offer of maintenance Feed’s opinion. Dogs are not considered pets.
The detailed order has been announced recently. “I disagree with the views that pets are also an important part of a decent lifestyle. Pets are necessary for a healthy human life because they can compensate for emotional deficiencies that arise from broken relationships,” the judge said.
Therefore, this cannot be grounds for a reduction in the amount of alimony, the court added. The woman told the court that she married the defendant, a businessman in Bangalore, in a grand ceremony in September 1986.
After a stable married life for quite some time, some disagreements arose, and in 2021, the respondent sent her to Mumbai. He has assured the woman that necessities and other basic necessities will be provided in accordance with her request for interim relief.
However, the estranged husband broke his promise, claiming that during their married life, he caused various acts of domestic violence. The applicant has no financial resources. She is sick and has health problems. Among other demands, the three dogs depended on her, the complaint said.
The woman claimed that her estranged husband was running a business in Bengaluru and was demanding Rs 70,000 a month for living expenses. However, the defendant denied all allegations and said he did not cause any domestic violence as claimed by the applicant.
He claimed the woman left the home on her own, through no fault of his own. After perusing the record, the court said the woman’s allegations of domestic violence could not be ignored.
On the surface, it can be inferred that these acts were caused by the respondent. The court stated that the respondent claimed to have suffered commercial losses and was unable to provide repair services, but did not provide specific materials to draw such inferences.
