washington: The White House said U.S. President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration for New York state after historic snowfall.
Biden also ordered federal assistance to supplement state and local response efforts to address the aftermath of severe winter storms and snowstorms, the White House said in a statement Monday.
In addition, the federal government has appointed a coordinating officer for federal recovery efforts in areas affected by the storm.
The emergency declaration applies to Kata Rotgers, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Jefferson, Lewis, Niagara, Oneida, Oswego, according to a statement from New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office. , St. Lawrence and Wyoming counties.
“I thank President Biden for his immediate approval of our emergency declaration request and for our continued strong partnership and Senator Schumer’s help in securing relief for New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said Monday.
“My team and I will continue to work around the clock to keep everyone safe, help the community dig and ensure that every penny goes to help rebuild and recover from this unprecedented, record-breaking and historic winter storm. “
The storm set a state record for the most snowfall in a 24-hour period, with more than 6 feet falling in parts of Erie County.
In Orchard Park, a village in Erie County, 80 inches of snow fell between Nov. 17-20, according to the National Weather Service.
Snowfall rates in these affected areas remained consistent throughout the storm at 2 to 3 inches per hour, with peaks of 6 inches per hour in some areas.
This heavy snowfall has created extremely dangerous travel conditions.
