Bhopal: With the three arrested, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) claimed to have destroyed an ISIS-linked terror module in an intelligence-led joint operation with the Madhya Pradesh Police Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS).
According to an official press release, during the night of May 26 and May 27, the Central Agency together with MP Police’s ATS team conducted raids at 13 locations in Jabalpur district, about 300 km from Bhopal.
It further stated that the three arrested persons were identified as Syed Mamoor Ali, Mohammad Adil Khan and Mohammad Shahid. “A large number of sharp-edged weapons, ammunition (including prohibited rifling), incriminating documents and digital devices were also seized during the search,” it said.
During the investigation, the NIA discovered that Mohammad Adil Khan was conducting activities in support of ISIS, and he was notified by the agency in August 2022. A case was subsequently opened during an investigation into the matter on May 24.
“It is understood that Muhammad Adil Khan and his associates were involved in spreading ISIS propaganda through social media platforms as well as ground-based ‘dawa’ schemes to carry out violent terrorist attacks in India in the context of ISIS. The module has been held in local mosques and Meetings/Dars in Houses and making plans and conspiracies to spread terror in the country,” the NIA press release said.
Further investigation revealed that the three defendants were extremely radicalized and determined to carry out violent jihad. They engage in fundraising, disseminate ISIS propaganda material, motivate and recruit youth, and attempt to procure weapons and ammunition to carry out terrorist activities.
“Syed Mamoor Ali created a local group (Tanzeem) under the name ‘Fisabilillah’ and also runs a WhatsApp group of the same name. arms suppliers,” it said.
A staunch follower and supporter of ISIS, Adil managed to rally a group of active Jabalpur-like militants. According to NIA surveys, some module members are already considering hijrat (flying) to conflict zones, while others plan to form a local group to carry out violent jihad in India.
“Adil also ran multiple YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp channels to motivate and recruit young people to join ISIS. Further investigation revealed that Shahid also planned to procure weapons including pistols. Improvised explosives used in violent attacks in India devices and even hand grenades,” the NIA said.
