Hyderabad: Transplant surgeons at the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) have achieved a unique feat when they performed four kidney transplants in a 24-hour period for a patient with end-stage renal disease.
Among the 4 cases of kidney transplantation, 1 case was relative transplantation, and the remaining 3 cases were cadaveric kidney transplantation. Transplantation requires a collaborative effort between the renal and urology transplant teams, as well as the availability of two dedicated transplant operating rooms with laminar flow.
The cost of four kidney transplants is between Rs 2 lakhs. 1 million rupees. Under the state-run Aarogyasri health insurance scheme, 1.5 million each is carried out free of charge for needy patients.
These cadaver recipients received kidneys from brain-dead heart donors from Mahabubnagar, Karimnagar and Hyderabad districts who had end-stage kidney disease and had been on dialysis for the past 4 to 5 years. All four kidney transplant recipients are doing well, with good urine output indicating a successful kidney transplant. The living transplant donor is also recovering well, doctors said.
The operation was performed by a team of urologists led by Prof. Ram Reddy and Prof. Rahul Devraj and included Dr. Vidyasagar, Dr. Ramachandraiah, Dr. Raghuveer, Dr. Charan Kumar, Dr. Dheeraj, Vinay, Dr.Sunil, Dr.Arun, Dr. Janaki, Dr. Vishnu , Dr. Pavan, Dr. Harsha, Dr. Suraj, Dr. Poovarasan, Dr. Anant, Dr. Shahrukh
