Odisha CM announces Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia payment for families of train accident victims

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the victims of the triple train accident at Bahanga Bazar near Balasore.

The aid will be provided by the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

The next of kin of the deceased will receive assistance of Rs 5 lakh and the seriously injured will receive Rs 1 lakh, said a statement issued by the chief marketing officer.

Patnaik, who inspected the scene of the tragedy on Saturday, also expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Earlier, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1 million and the Prime Minister’s Office announced Rs 2 lakh for families who lost loved ones in the tragedy.

According to initial reports from the railways, the Coromandel Express entered the circle line and hit a lorry parked off the main line near Bahanaga Bazar railway station.

Three train accidents have killed at least 288 people and injured more than 1,100.

The Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express along with a freight train happened on Friday near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore, about 250 kilometers south of Kolkata, in Bhubaneswar 170 km north.
