Operation Kaveri: 186 Indians evacuated from Sudan arrive in Cochin

Kochi: A total of 186 Indians from conflict-torn Sudan arrived in Cochin under Operation Kaveri on Monday.

“#OperationKaveri continues to bring Indians home. Flight with 186 passengers landed in Cochin,” Arindam Bagchi, official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA), tweeted on Monday.

The flight to Cochin on Sunday departed from Jeddah with 186 passengers on board.

“9th outbound flight from Jeddah. 186 passengers on this flight to Cochin,” Bachi tweeted.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) tweeted on Monday: “Nearly 1,400 Indians have been evacuated on IAF aircraft over the past few days, 260 people were evacuated by two C-130J aircraft, including elderly people over 90 years old and a 102-year-old. 2,300 evacuated Indians have arrived in India, External Affairs Minister (EAM) Jaishankar said earlier on Sunday.

“A C-130 Indian Air Force flight carrying 40 passengers has landed in New Delhi. About 2300 people reached India through this flight,” tweeted EAM Jaishankar.

The number of people on the eighth flight reached 2300, but the three subsequent flights carried 229, 288 and 135 passengers respectively, bringing the number of evacuees to more than 2500.

On Saturday night, 365 Indians from Sudan arrived in New Delhi under Operation Kaveri, while a flight carrying 231 Indian passengers arrived in the capital on Saturday morning. Several countries, including India, are trying to evacuate their citizens from the conflict-torn country as Sudan has declared a ceasefire.

Under Operation Kaveri, the Indian government will evacuate about 3,000 passengers of Indian origin from Sudan.

Sudan is experiencing bloodshed due to clashes between the army and paramilitary forces.

Fighting broke out between soldiers loyal to Sudanese army leader Abdul Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Mohammad Hamdan Daglo.

India, committed to ensuring that no Indian nationals remain in Sudan, has deployed military aircraft and warships in the war-torn country to bring its citizens safely to Operation Kaveri.
