Orleans (France): India’s incoming men’s shuttle player Priyanshu Rajawat beat Denmark’s Magnus Johannesen 21-15, 19-21, 21-16 at the summit on Sunday for the men’s singles title at the Orleans Masters.
It was Rajawat’s first BWF World Tour title and his first Super 300 Championship final. His only previous BWF World Tour final was at last year’s Odisha Open Super 100 event.
Moreover, Priyanshu’s win was the first men’s singles title for an Indian badminton player on tour since Lakshya Sen won the India Open last January.
En route to his first Super 300 title, the youngster dropped just one race in the entire championship.
The young Indian took the first game with ease. But he made some unforced errors in the second, putting Johannessen back in the game. Rajawat scored 7 points in a row to lead 16-14. But another string of mistakes by him locked Johannessen into the second.
Rajawat got off to a good start in the third inning, taking the lead with five runs. Some mistakes by the Indian brought Johannesen close, but the Indian mustered up his nerve to close out the game in 1 hour and 8 minutes.
Priyanshu is the last remaining Indian Challenger and has played well in the game. In the second round, he defeated Japan’s Nishimoto Kenta, ranked 12th in the world, who had won the Spanish Masters in Madrid and advanced to the Orleans Masters as the top seed.
