Angels: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently sent out membership invitations. guess what? Indian film personalities Ram Charan, Mani Ratnam, Karan Johar, Siddharth Roy Kapur, Chandrabose and MM Keeravani have been invited to become members of the organisation.
RRR Art Director Sabu Cyril and Cinematographer KK Senthil Kumar are also invited.
“The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals to our membership,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said in a statement, Variety reported.
“They represent a global caliber of talent across film disciplines who have had a vital impact on the art and science of cinema and on moviegoers around the world.”
Austin Butler, Ke Huy Quan, Keke Palmer, Jr NT Rama Rao and music superstar Taylor Swift are also invited to join the 398 artists and senior members who are members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tube list.
If all invitees accept membership this year, the Academy’s total membership will reach 10,817 (from 10,665 last year), with 9,375 eligible to vote (reduced from 9,665 due to deaths, retirements and conversions to honorary membership) The 96th Academy Awards will take place on March 10, 2024.
The Class of 2023 is 40 percent female. 34% belonged to underrepresented ethnic/racial communities and 52% were from 51 countries and territories outside the United States.
Other interesting stats about this category of invitees are that four branches invite more women than men — casting directors, costume designers, makeup and hair stylists, and marketing and public relations. Most candidates for the actors and directors branch come from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities.
Eight filmmakers are invited to take part in multiple offshoots – Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Happened Simultaneously”), Colm Baired (“The Quiet Girl”), Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front”), Antonio Campos (“All Quiet on the Western Front”), Lucas DeHolt (“Close”), Anna Katz (“Unquiet”) The Dog”) and Santiago Miter (Argentina, 1985); however, they can only choose one of them after accepting membership.
In 2022, the Oscars invited 397 new members, including singer Billie Eilish, Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, “Belfast” star Caitrina Balfe, Jamie Douglas South and Disney executive Dana Walden.
With this new membership, the College is now 34% women, 18% from underrepresented communities and 20% from communities outside the United States
This year’s awards contenders will feature massive star power and legendary filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” with Leonardo DiCaprio, and Denis Villeneuve Watts’ Dune Part II with Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet.
