Hyderabad: Osmania University (OU) has several hotels that are dilapidated and uninhabitable, and new hotels are being built on the university campus. The new 500-bed dormitory, which will cater to men studying at the campus college, is due to break ground this month.
Tenders have been opened and the Telangana State Education and Welfare Infrastructure Development Corporation (TSEWIDC) has been commissioned to work on the dormitory, which is about to be built near the Institute of Public Enterprises on campus. The three-story building will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including a steam kitchen, dining room, residence halls, reading room and gymnasium.
Currently, there are 24 residence halls on campus, housing 8,500 students, 70% of whom are women. Of the 12 men’s dorms, only 4 are habitable and the rest are dilapidated and in need of immediate repairs.
In addition to the residence halls, a new administration building and a centennial tower will be built on campus, work on which will begin this month. Both have been approved by the Varsity Executive Committee, the university’s highest decision-making body.
The university has also decided to build dormitories on the university campus for women studying at the Faculty of Science, University of Saifabad. Currently, these students live in dormitories on the university campuses and commute by bus. In addition to creating space for more OU campus students, this move by the university will also ease the burden on campus housing. It will also ease students’ transportation burden from OU campus housing to their respective colleges. Last February, the university administration opened a 500-bed dormitory for girls on campus.
“Some of the men’s dorms are dilapidated and uninhabitable. Therefore, it has been decided to build a 500-bed men’s dormitory. In addition, the University will carry out necessary repairs to the dormitories as needed. We are also carrying out repair works at the Faculty of Arts. A study It has been completed and new technology will be used to ensure that the roof of the art college will not seep. Work will start soon,” a senior official said.
