Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi votes in the second phase of parliamentary elections in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Monday.
Prime Minister Modi exercised his franchise at Rani Puni Hill Public School in Ahmedabad. Earlier, he left Gandhinagar Raj Bhawan to vote.
Prime Minister Modi also greeted people on his way to school before voting. At the polling place, he stood in line waiting for his turn to vote.
Earlier today, he urged people in the state to vote in large numbers. Voting begins at 8am today and will continue until 5pm.
“Urge everyone to vote in the second phase of Gujarat elections, especially young voters and women voters to vote in large numbers. I will be voting in Ahmedabad around 9am,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also vote in the second phase in Ahmedabad today.
The second and final stage of voting is being conducted in 93 assembly constituencies across 14 districts in northern and central Gujarat. As many as 833 candidates from 61 political parties are contesting the second phase of the Gujarat state elections, whose fate will be decided by more than 2.51 million voters.
The Election Commission set up 26,409 polling stations and will use nearly 36,000 electronic voting machines (EVMs) for this purpose. Some 29,000 presiding officers and more than 84,000 polling personnel have been deployed in 14 districts to facilitate voting.
According to P Bharathi, Chief Election Officer of Gujarat, out of a total of 26,409 polling stations, 93 are model polling stations, 93 are environmental polling stations, another 93 are managed by Divyang and 14 are managed by youths. The 13,319 polling places for the second phase are being webcast.
“A total of 2,51,58,730 voters will cast their ballots, out of which, 1,29,26,501 males, 1,22,31,335 females and 894 from the third gender,” Bharathi said.
The 93 voting seats for the second phase are spread across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Patan, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Aravali, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara, Anand, Kheda and Chhota Udaipur districts.
Key constituencies in the final phase include Ghatlodia, which will decide the fate of the vote for Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel; Patidar leader Hardik Patel, who will run for the BJP candidate in Viramgam; South) the saffron sent Alpesh Thakor.
