All India Adivasi Congress Chairman Shivajirao Moghe said in his speech: “This is the first time a tribal president has been elected and we have a female president. This (inauguration of the prime minister) is an insult to the tribe and women

New Delhi: On Thursday, the All India Congress of Indigenous Peoples accused Modi’s government of “insulting” the tribe by not allowing the country’s first tribal chief, Drupadi Murmu, to inaugurate the new parliament building as it announced a nationwide election on May 26. protested the move.

At a news conference at the AICC headquarters here, All India Adivasi Congress chairman Shivajirao Moghe said it was an “insult” to democracy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, rather than the president, inaugurated the new parliament building.

Sharing Moghe’s speech on Twitter, Congress Secretary-General Jairam Ramesh said: “Then President Ramnath Kovind was not invited to the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Parliament in December 2020 and the current President Droupadi Murmu is now not allowed to open the new Parliament. ceremony.” He said the Adiwasis Congress in its statement emphasized that the constitutional rights of Adiwasis and Dalits are not secure under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, even if one of them is in the highest constitutional position.

It also highlights how the Modi government has systematically weakened forest and environmental laws to the detriment of tribal communities, Ramesh said.

In his speech, Moghe said: “This is the first time a tribe has a president and we have a female president. It (being prime minister) is an insult to tribes and women. The one who spoke at the joint meeting. The president should open the parliament.” “I don’t know if this is happening because we are tribes,” said the head of the All India Adivasi Congress Department, which is part of the Indian National Congress.

Moh’s attack on the government came a day after 20 opposition parties announced a boycott of Prime Minister Modi’s inauguration of the new parliament building.

Nineteen opposition parties, including Congress, the Left, TMC, SP and AAP, came together to announce the boycott, saying they saw no value in the new building with “the soul of democracy sucked away”. Separately, AIMIM chairman Asaduddin Owaisi said his party would not attend the event if Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla did not inaugurate the new parliament building.

Moghe said that even though the “bhumi poojan” of the new parliament building had been completed, then-president Ram Nath Kovind was taken to the back burner. “Twice Modiji came forward to officiate at the inauguration.” He claimed that the Modi government deliberately insulted the backward class because it was “anti-tribal”. “Tomorrow we will start a national agitation at the block, village, district level against this attempt to humiliate the tribes and women of this country…We want the President not the Prime Minister to inaugurate the new Parliament. There is still time for the Prime Minister to change his mind , let the president inaugurate the new parliament building,” he said.

“We will also protest the government’s policies against the tribes. We will protest peacefully in a democratic way. They use the tribes to participate in politics and we will protest that,” Moghe said.

Earlier in the day, Congress attacked Modi, saying “a man’s ego and desire for self-promotion” had deprived the first female tribal president of the constitutional privilege of dedicating the complex.

The BJP-led National League for Democracy also launched a sharp counterattack after the opposition party called for a boycott, calling its stance a “flagrant affront to the democratic spirit and constitutional values of our great country”. The 19 opposition parties said in a joint statement that Prime Minister Modi’s decision to personally inaugurate the new parliament building “to the complete exclusion of President Drupadi Murmu is not only a grave affront, but also a disservice to our democracy.” Direct attack and we need to respond accordingly.” At the invitation of the speaker of the lower house, Modi will inaugurate the new parliament building on May 28.
