Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday slammed the federal government for not inviting her to the inauguration of the new parliament, belittling the status of the country’s president, saying he would not attend the event scheduled for May 28 .
In a statement here, the Chief Minister said that whenever there is a new parliamentary session, the President invites every MP to attend the session. However, he said it was ironic that the constitutional head of government was not even invited to the event celebrating the inauguration of the new parliament.
Mann said it was “a mockery of the Constitution” that was completely baseless and unwelcome.
The Chief Minister said the constitution was drawn up by a visionary leader like Dr BR Ambedkar who enshrined fundamental values to ensure the successful functioning of democracy. However, he said it was gross disrespect to the founding fathers of the constitution that the BJP-led NDA government indulged in such tantrums as part of an entrenched conspiracy.
Mann said fellow countrymen will never accept it and will teach the BJP a lesson in the coming days.
The chief minister said his conscience would not allow him to attend any such event where a “power-hungry government” didn’t even bother to invite the head of state.
Therefore, he said, they will boycott the event and will not participate as a sign of protest against the heavy-handed tactics of the BJP and its allies.
Mann made it clear that if the president dedicated this new parliament to the people of his country, they would be happy to attend the event.
