PV Narasimha Rao's birthday: Modi, Hager pay tribute to late PM

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress Party chief Malikajun Hager paid tribute to the late Prime Minister Narasimha Rao’s birthday on Wednesday.

“Commemorating the birthday of PV Narasimha Rao Ji. His visionary leadership and commitment to India’s development is noteworthy. We salute his invaluable contribution to our nation’s progress,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted.

Hager also tweeted that the late veteran leader’s “tremendous contribution to India’s economic transformation and nation-building should always be cherished”.

Born on June 28, 1921, in the village of Raknepali in Telanagana, Rao was the first person outside the Nehru-Gandhi family to serve a full five-year term as prime minister from 1991 to 1996.

In 1996, he lost the election.

Under Rao’s leadership, India’s then finance minister, Manmohan Singh, introduced economic reforms in 1991.

It was Rao who provided Singh with political funding and protection to enforce his decisions.

Died on December 23, 2004 at the age of 81.
