Hyderabad: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will address a public meeting in Kamam on Sunday, sounding the party’s voting horn for the upcoming Telangana parliamentary elections.
Congress Party (CLP) leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka’s “padayatra” will also end at the rally.
Party sources said Gandhi would congratulate Vikramalka, who began his march on foot near Adilabad on Saturday and had covered 1,360 kilometers in 108 days as of Saturday.
In this meeting, former Conman MP Panguleti Srinivas Reddy will formally join the Congress Party.
Srinivas Reddy and former minister Jupally Krishna Rao recently announced their decision to join the party.
The Congress party’s victory in the recent Karnataka state election boosted parties in neighboring Telangana state.
Telangana Pradesh Congressional Committee (TPCC) chairman and MP Revanth Reddy said the party will end BRS rule in the state by holding a rally in Khammam.
Reddy said Congress would sound the election horn through the Kaman rally, expressing confidence that the meeting would be more well-attended than an earlier public rally organized by the ruling party BRS in the town.
To win parliamentary elections in Telangana later this year, the Congress party is orchestrating arrangements to make the rallies attended by Gandhi a resounding success.
The party also seeks to fend off a challenge from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is trying to emerge as an alternative to the ruling Socialist Party of India.
The BJP has won parliamentary elections twice in the past few years and performed well in the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, posing a threat to capture the main opposition seat of the Congress party.
The Congress Party has been the main opposition party in Telangana since its formation in 2014.
