Raigad landslide death toll reaches 22, NDRF resumes search operations in Maharashtra

Rays: The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) continued search and rescue operations in Ir Shargard, which was hit by a landslide in Raigad, on Saturday. So far, 22 bodies have been recovered from the scene, officials said.

A team from the NDRF arrived at the scene early this morning and more teams are expected to join the search operation later today.

Uddhav Thackeray, head of Shiv Sena (UBT), will visit the landslide victims who live in nearby temples at around 10.30 am today.

A landslide hit the tribal village on the slopes of Khalapur tehsil in Raigad district, about 80 kilometers from Mumbai, at around 11pm on Wednesday.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shind visited the scene of the tragedy yesterday to take stock of rescue efforts. He also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 500,000 to the families of the deceased, officials said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to Chief Minister Shindh after the incident. Shah said four National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) teams had been deployed to carry out the rescue operation.
NDRF 5th Battalion Commander SB Singh said five more bodies were found on Friday and the search and rescue operation was suspended after consultation with the district administration due to bad weather conditions.

“We conducted a search and rescue operation with three dogs and one of them found two bodies today. We faced many challenges and were unable to bring our latest machinery to the (landslide) site,” an NDRF official said on Friday.
