reed: Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed Harbhajan Singh to become the second-highest wicket taker in Indian international cricket on Saturday.

Aschin did just that in the first Test of the two-match series against the West Indies for the Dominica.

The veteran spinner posted one of his best away performances, going 5/60 in the first inning and 7/71 in the second for a 12/131 total.

With such a performance. Ashwin has 709 wickets in 271 international appearances. The average of those wickets was 25.67 and his best bowling figure was 7/59. He has 27 fours, 34 fives and eight ten-wickets in international cricket.

The best bowler in Indian international cricket was Anil Kumble who struck 953 in 401 appearances with an average of 30.06 and a best of 10/74. He has 39 fours, 37 fives and eight ten-wickets.

Harbhajan now slips to third place with 707 wickets in 365 games for an average of 32.59 and a best of 8/84. He took 19 fours, 28 wickets and five ten-wickets in international cricket.

With these ten wickets, Ashwin equaled Kumble for the most by an Indian bowler with ten wickets, eight in total. Harbhajan followed with five ten-wickets.

Ashwin’s 12/131 was the third-best bowling stats for the Indians in away Tests. The Indian’s best performance overseas was that of Bhagwath Chandrashekhar, who scored 12/104 overall in the 1977 Test against Australia in Melbourne. He is followed by Irfan Pathan, who beat Zimbabwe 12/126 at Harare 2005.

The spinner’s 12/131 was also the third-best performance by a bowler in the India-West Indies Test. The best bowling performance by an Indian against Wendy’s so far is that of Narendra Hirwani, who scored 16/136 against India in Chennai in 1988. He was followed by Andy Roberts, who scored 12/121 against India in Chennai in 1975.

Ashwin has taken five wickets in both Test innings six times, the most for India. Overall, the feat was accomplished by Sri Lankan spin master Muttiah Muralidaran with 11.

The spinner now has six wickets against Wendy’s, the most for the Indians. He also tied Malcolm Marshall for the most five wickets in the India-West Indies Test.

West Indies opted to bat first when the game started and went out with 150 in the first innings. Athanaze (47) and captain Braithwaite (20) were the only ones who could contribute to the scoreboard. Ashwin’s flute and Ravindra Jadeja’s 3/26 figures topped the Indian bowling charts.

India finished the first day 80-0 with captain Rohit Sharma (30*) and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (40*) unbeaten.

From then on, India overwhelmed West Indies, with Rohit and Jaiswal occupying the crease for most of the second day. Rohit scored a 10th century in the Test, while Jaiswal scored a huge one in his debut. Rohit was sent off for 103 off 221 balls, including 10 fours and two sixes. This ended the 229-game opening game.

Next, Jaiswal and Virat Kohli teamed up for 110 at the third wicket. Jaiswal was dismissed after scoring 171 off 387 balls (16 fours and one six). Kohli missed his century as he scored 76 off 182 balls (five boundaries).

India’s innings are 421/5 with Ravindra Jadeja (37*) and debutant Ishan Kishan (1*) unbeaten.

Kemar Roach, Alzarri Joseph, Rahkeem Cornwell, Jomel Warrican and Alik Atana Alick Athanaze scored a wicket separately for the hosts. India lead with 271 runs.

In response, West Indies once again looked ill-equipped to deal with the spinning attack of the Ashwin-Jadja duo. The two all-rounders once again demonstrated the magic of spin, beating the Windies by just 130 runs.
Alick Athanaze (28) and Jason Holder (20*) were the only ones able to hit the 20 mark for the Windies.

Ashwin got 7/71 and Jadeja got 2/38. Mohammed Siraj takes a wicket.

Jaiswal won the Player of the Century award.

India lead 1-0 in the two-match series.
