Road accident claims 403 lives in Warangal tri-city

Warangal: According to police records, a total of 1,032 road accidents resulting in up to 403 people died and another 1,000 were injured in these accidents. Three districts – Hanamkonda, Warangal and Jangaon – fall under the jurisdiction of the Warangal Police Commission.

According to the Warangal Police Department, a total of 426 people were killed in road accidents in 2021, while 1,110 people were injured out of a total of 1,106 accidents. In 2020, there were 984 accidents, 386 people were killed and 950 people were injured. According to police records, the number of fatal road accidents rose by 9.94% in 2021. “Youth reckless, careless driving and not wearing helmets are the main reasons for the increase in fatal traffic accidents,” a police officer said.

In the early hours of October 11, 2022, two people, including a young man, died at the scene after a sports bike hit a cyclist near the Venkatrama Theater junction. The 18-year-old cyclist was not wearing a bicycle helmet. “Reckless and negligent driving and not wearing a helmet resulted in the deaths of two people in the accident,” the official said, advising parents to think twice before buying expensive, high-powered exercise bikes for their teens.

Warangal Police Commissioner AV Ranganath pointed out that violation of road safety rules is the main cause of traffic accidents, and he urged people to strictly abide by traffic rules to ensure safety. “We are working in coordination with the Road Traffic Authority and other departments to identify black spots (accident-prone areas) on the road and check for road accidents,” he added.

Mohammad Azam, a social activist, lamented: “Although the police are trying to enforce helmets for motorcyclists from November 1, 2021, many people are reluctant to wear helmets.” He urged parents not to give bicycles to minors.

Although the police enforced the “no helmet, no fuel” rule in the three cities of Warangal from August 15, most people did not abide by it. Gas station managers are also not interested in enforcing the rule.
