Hyderabad: Officers of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) Secunderabad Division have seized drugs worth Rs 164 crore so far this year in “Operation Narcotics”.
In an effort to curb the flow of drugs by train, the Patriotic Front launched Operation Narcotics, and since April 2019, the Patriotic Front has been empowered to conduct searches, seizures and arrests under the NDPS Act and has been actively trying to curb this illicit trade.
As part of these efforts, the RPF, in cooperation with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and other law enforcement agencies, has stepped up inspections on trains and at identified black spots across the country to crack down on drug dealers involved in this illicit trade.
In 2022, RPF Secunderabad recovered drug products worth Rs 784 crore in 35 incidents, arrested 41 drug smugglers and handed them over to relevant law enforcement agencies.
So far this year, RPF Secunderabad officers have arrested nine people and seized drugs worth Rs 164 crore, a 90.69 per cent increase in the value of narcotic seizures compared to the same period last year.
Two people carrying cannabis on the Konark Express were caught during a check between Lingampalli and Tandur railway stations on Tuesday night. Drugs worth Rs 4.56 lakh were seized.
Secunderabad Senior Divisional Security Commissioner Debashmita Chattopadhyay Banerjee applauded the RPF’s actions and said drugs not only destroy the health of the youth but also damage the economy and national well-being.
“Drug addiction has far-reaching effects as it affects a person’s physical and mental health. RPF Secunderabad Division in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies has stepped up checks on trains to crack down on drug dealers involved in this illicit trade,” she says.
