New Delhi: In the second Test in Port of Spain on Friday, West Indies limited India to 438 runs in the first innings before finishing the day 86-1.
Captains Kraigg Brathwaite (37 strikes) and Kirk McKenzie (14 strikes) will return to action on Saturday.
Earlier, former India captain Virat Kohli shot 121 for the first time in five years overseas, Ravindra Jadeja 61 and R Ashwin 56 as India put themselves in a strong position.
Commenting on what to expect on Day 3, former India player and JioCinema expert Saba Karim said: “It’s a great opportunity for the young West Indian team to get a good first innings and get into this Test match at least. They have to put more pressure on Indian bowlers on wickets like this and you would expect a good performance from this young West Indian batting squad.”
So what do Indian bowlers need to do differently to keep the hosts in trouble? “It’s a challenging surface for speed bowlers and spinners because the wicket is on the slower side. So even if the spinners are able to trick the batsman on the fly, they have plenty of time to take their back foot and counteract the spin or turn provided,” explains Karim.
“For speed bowlers, they need to plan differently all the time. Short ball tactics may also become effective, or bowling on one side may help. We saw what the West Indian pace bowlers did against India. Their angles were away from the lefties. A similar strategy could be employed with the young Indian pace bowling attack.
Kareem expected the wicket to provide some turning points as the game went into the end of the game. “The batting surface on day two was fantastic. On day three, I do expect the wickets to offer some kind of turn, not so much bounce, but that turn might be more effective against the Indian spinners. Ashwin and Jadeja should be able to take advantage of the conditions.”
