New Delhi: On Friday, the Supreme Court ordered the early release of Nalini Sriharan and RP Ravichandran, who served life sentences in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
Both of them applied to the Supreme Court for premature release.
Justices BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna said the Supreme Court’s decision in the AG Perarivalan case applies to their case.
Citing extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the constitution, the Supreme Court ordered the release of Perarivalan on May 18, who had served more than 30 years in prison.
Gandhi was assassinated by a female suicide bomber identified as Dhanu at a polling rally in Sripurambudur, Tamil Nadu, on the evening of 21 May 1991.
