Hyderabad: The television content of the ’90s was undeniably incredible, with plenty of episodes covering a wide range of important issues. “Hip Hip Hurray” is one of those shows, and a segment from the series that’s currently going viral on the Internet was way ahead of its time.

“Hip Hip Hurray” shows the lives of a group of 12th graders. The now viral video posted by a fan page shows the characters getting together after school to discuss the movie “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Although the film became a blockbuster upon its release, the characters on the show saw it very differently.

In the video, we can see students talking about sexism and misogyny in movies, and how the characters of Rahul (SRK) and Anjali (Kajol) perpetuate sexist stereotypes. “Hip hip hurray is so ahead of its time.. #90skid (sic),” read the caption.

Many internet users agreed with the viral clip in the comments section, praising the show as one of the most compelling coming-of-age dramas of its time. Meanwhile, several fans of the show also felt nostalgic watching the segment.

“Hum sabka childhood…but imagine, those kids meant so much at the time, and to this day we continue to see this stereotypical character written for women. While I love #KuchKuchHotaHai, this problem with this movie doesn’t even Fans can’t ignore (sic),” one user commented. “I hope young people today should watch this show (sic),” said another.

that’s exactly what i thought #KuchKuchHotaHain when it’s released.we create #Satya In the same year, it was neck and neck in all awards. Never thought KKHH would be so celebratory one day – especially from those who hated it at the time. The power of money, power and marketing? #HiHipHurray https://t.co/dIYizp7EHk

This show was the real deal for its time. The real Indian version of Friends. Parental controls on the TV and the show are also a hurdle to overcome.

They even had an episode with Down Syndrome! Where they arrange special programs for mentally handicapped children..

Hip hip hurray and Neev (Doordarshan) is the best school TV show. One is to show life in a subway school, and the other is a boarding school.

The TV shows of the 80’s and 90’s were actually pretty up-to-date with the times – later shows were mostly dominated by saas-bahu themes and other misogynistic + backwards crap. https://t.co/otrmfGd7Pe

I don’t think Hip Hip Hooray was ahead of its time. When it was broadcast, there was a feeling of advancing with the times.

India in the 2020s is so behind the times, which makes Indian TV in the 90s look so ahead of its time.

In the 90s, it was just TV. https://t.co/3obumBXrQ3

Created and directed by Nupur Asthana, who later directed ‘Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge’ and ‘Bewakoofiyaan’, the show also features actors such as Vishal Malhotra, Sharokh Barucha, Pamela Mukherjee, Mehul Nisar, Purab Kohli, Zafar Karachiwala and Rushad Rana . The show is currently available on Zee5.
