Hyderabad: The National Medical Council (NMC), the regulator of medical education in India, has directed medical schools to respond promptly to harassment and harassment complaints from first-year MBBS undergraduates and PG medical students.
These instructions were given in cases where junior UG medical students and PG doctors took extreme measures to commit suicide due to the brutality and harassment of their seniors.
In a notice, the regulator said the medical school did not respond to harassment complaints in a timely manner and did not submit a compliance report under the Prevention and Prohibition of Harassment Regulations for Medical Schools and Institutions 2021.
“There is a portal on the NMC website where medical students can file complaints. The NMC used to forward such complaints received through the portal to colleges. However, it has been observed that colleges do not respond to complaints forwarded to them in a timely manner. Please Complaints forwarded to them are dealt with promptly by medical schools and compliance reports are sent immediately. Failure to respond to complaints will be taken seriously,” it said.
The NMC has directed medical schools to comply by submitting compliance reports by the end of June and providing a list of harassment and harassment complaints from UG and PG medical students for the 2021 and 2022 batches.
The Prevention and Prohibition of Ragged Clothing Regulations in Medical Schools and Institutions, 2021 was notified on 1 November 2021, and according to the NMC, it has been 18 months since any compliance report was filed by the medical schools in the country.
