San Francisco: CEO Sundar Pichai received a massive pay package of nearly $226 million in 2022 amid layoffs at Google parent Alphabet.
Pichaia’s compensation included about $218 million in stock awards, according to the tech giant’s filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
However, Pichai’s salary has reportedly been steady at $2 million over the past three years.
On January 20, Google CEO confirmed in a letter to employees that about 12,000 employees will be laid off globally, accounting for more than 6% of the total number of employees.
According to media reports, during the layoffs, technology giant Google also formulated a number of cost-cutting measures, such as reducing free snacks and fitness classes for existing employees.
The company’s micro-kitchens, which offer free snacks like cereal, espresso and soda, are closed on days when supplies are typically significantly lower.
The company also halted spending on personal devices such as laptops, according to an internal memo.
Tech giant Google also notified its employees via email that fewer employees will be promoted to higher levels this year than in the past.
Google India has laid off more than 400 employees and some of the affected employees have shared their plight on LinkedIn.
