Surat: Some 15,000 women from 15 states across the country took part in the city’s first-ever “sari walk marathon” on Sunday, aimed at promoting fitness.
The event also aims to promote Surat’s textile industry, which is a major contributor to the city’s economy, and the event starts at Athwa Party Plot and continues via Parle Point for a three-kilometre journey, ending at the starting point. Only women and girls in sarees are allowed to participate.
Expressing her gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Surat Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal said, “India’s G20 presidency under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership is a Something to be proud of. The Saree Walkathon is here today. About 15,000 women signed up for the event and women from 15 states came here.”

The Walkathon is organized by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Surat Smart City Development Ltd in partnership with Fit India Movement, a national campaign to promote fitness and health of citizens .
The “Sari Walking Marathon” will reportedly be followed by a four-day exhibition in the city, which will feature saree artisans from across the country.
Apart from the fitness initiative, the Surat Municipal Corporation also plans to set up baby-feeding centers in public places. The move aims to provide a comfortable and safe space for mothers to breastfeed their babies in public.
