CaliforniaGoogle is developing an artificial intelligence tool for news publishers that can generate article text and headlines, CNN reported Thursday, underscoring how the technology could soon change journalism.
The tech giant said in a statement that it is seeking to partner with news outlets to use artificial intelligence tools in newsrooms.
CNN quoted a Google spokesperson as saying: “Our goal is to give journalists the option to use these emerging technologies to improve their work and productivity, just like we provide people with accessibility tools in Gmail and Google Docs.”
The New York Times previously reported that the project, known internally as Genesis, had been pitched to The Times, The Washington Post and News Corp, which owns The Wall Street Journal.
Google’s statement did not name the media companies, but said the company was paying particular attention to small publishers, adding that the program was not designed to replace journalists or their essential role in reporting, authoring and fact-checking articles, according to CNN.
The new tool comes at a time when tech companies, including Google, are racing to develop a new range of generative artificial intelligence capabilities and deploy them into apps used in the workplace in hopes of simplifying tasks and making workers more productive.
However, these tools, trained on information online, have also raised concerns that they could get facts wrong or respond with hallucinations.
News outlet CNET had to issue a major correction earlier this year after trying to write a story using artificial intelligence tools. Earlier this month, Gizmodo posted a simple AI-written Star Wars story that also needed correction. But both outlets said they would continue to use the technology, according to CNN.
