Tech Tok: Satellite connectivity for distress rescue

Remember when everyone was walking around with big, bulky satellite phones? Wired headphones, matching frequencies, and “overs” are all a fad. Then as technology got more sophisticated, we started using palm-sized phones. But guess what; our far behind satellite technology will help us out.

Qualcomm has struck a deal with Iridium, the satellite phone company that makes the chips that go into nearly every Android phone, to provide satellite connectivity for Android smartphones.

Here’s how it works. This feature will allow you to communicate using passing satellites when you don’t have mobile coverage and can’t send or receive messages.

Unlike our mobile towers, which only cover specific locations, satellites cover the entire planet. According to reports, the satellites expected to be used here will fly in a low orbit about 780 kilometers from the earth. When you send a message, these groups of satellites that can communicate with each other will deliver your message.

Although when Apple announced the iPhone 14’s satellite-like feature last September, it was limited to some iPhone users. When a Qualcomm feature goes live, it will be available to millions of other people.

The feature, dubbed “Snapdragon Satellite,” is expected to be available to select devices first, before rolling out to all Android phones. However, enabling the feature is up to phone manufacturers and governments to allow it.

Microsoft’s participation in ChatGPT:

The OpenAI project has garnered the biggest backing from Microsoft amid reports suggesting the use of ChatGPT to create malware.

The tech giant is considering integrating ChatGPT’s technology into its search engines Bing, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. In addition, there are reports that Microsoft is still negotiating to invest $10 million in OpenAI. ChatGPT, an interactive chatbot created by OpenAI, went into public testing last November.

WhatsApp without Internet:

Back when the internet was an essential tool in our daily lives, regional authorities, especially those in war-torn regions, have tried to control or limit its availability.

To mitigate this, the widely used messaging app WhatsApp allows its users to connect through a proxy server when the internet is blocked or disrupted due to shutdowns. It says in their blog post that the level of privacy and security will be maintained even on proxy servers. The Meta-owned app also condemned the blackout in Iran and offered to help anyone willing to set up a volunteer agency to help people communicate freely.

Musk breaks Guinness record:

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has broken a Guinness World Record for the largest loss of personal wealth ever. Since November 2021, he has lost about $180 billion.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, this number is only an approximation. The previous record was held by Japanese tech investor Masayoshi Son, who lost $58.6 billion in 2000.
