It’s not news that Tesla’s Elon Musk and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg are the main competitors. But their latest social media platform adds fuel to the fire even further.
Musk took over Twitter in 2022, but the organization has been rather volatile since then. To compete with Twitter, Zuckerberg last week launched an Instagram application Threads. The two mocked each other online. Musk even called Zuckerberg a “jerk” and Threads a “copycat.”
These two platforms are similar and serve the same purpose – to provide users with a platform to share ideas. But it was this similarity that didn’t sit well with Twitter’s bosses, and its launch actually caused a drop in Twitter traffic.
Just one day after Threads launched, Twitter threatened legal action against it. “Competition is good, cheating is not,” said Elon Musk, who claimed Meta hired dozens of former Twitter employees who “had and continue to have access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information.”
In response, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone (Andy Stone) wrote on Threads: “No one on the Threads engineering team is an ex-Twitter employee, which is not a problem at all.”
Interestingly, despite being ostracized by many prior to launch, Threads became the first platform to surpass 100 million signups in less than a week, surpassing the record set by ChatGPT.
Having an alternative platform is sure to be an issue as Twitter struggles to win back advertisers after Musk took over. To make matters worse for Twitter, Threads integrates with Instagram, making it a more lucrative advertising option.

ChatGPT user numbers plummet
For the first time since its launch, OpenAI’s AI chatbot, ChatGPT, has seen its website traffic drop. Traffic to both the ChatGPT app and website fell 9.7 percent in June, according to a report from The Washington Post.
Data from Sensor Tower also shows that downloads of the ChatGPT app on iOS have dropped significantly. While ChatGPT is now integrated into several other platforms, its own website also appears to be struggling.
