Hyderabad: On Wednesday, the Cabinet Subcommittee on Agriculture sought views and suggestions from scientists, experts and other stakeholders on the proposed advancement of the Yasangi (Rabi) crop season to mitigate the adverse effects of changing climatic conditions. They were ordered to conduct an in-depth study on the relevant issues and submit a report before the next cabinet subcommittee meeting.
A cabinet subcommittee held its first meeting with stakeholders at the Secretariat of State on Wednesday to review various aspects of Yasangi seasonal crop management. Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy chaired a cabinet subcommittee comprising Ministers Gangula Kamalakar, Errabelli Dayakar Rao, Koppula Eshwar and A Indrakaran Reddy.
Although the agricultural sector has made significant progress over the past nine years due to state government initiatives to benefit farmers, the Yasangi crop has become a challenge for both farmers and the state government. Paddy and other crops suffered losses before harvest due to erratic rains. To mitigate the damage, the Chief Minister suggested planting crops earlier and appointed a Cabinet subcommittee to review the issue.
Hence, the ministers discussed issues of crop management for the Yasangi season, providing high yielding rice varieties with less time and investment, crop rotation and other issues. They also deliberated on erratic rains, the resulting damage and measures to be taken during the meeting to advance the crop season.
