Hyderabad: The National Cabinet meeting on Thursday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao announced the repeal of Government Directive No. 111 issued in 1996 to prevent over-industrialization and heavy construction activities in 84 villages and pollution in Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar.
Briefing the media on the proceedings of the meeting, Minister T Harish Rao said that the existing bylaws of the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) restricting land will apply to the 84 villages in the Shamshabad Revenue Management Area, Rajendranagar, Moinabad, Chevella and Shabad – all under Within the 10 km catchment area of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar.
Both Hyderabad city and villages within the HMDA limits are no longer dependent on these two water sources. The water supply for the cities and suburbs comes mainly from the Godavari, Krishna and Manjra rivers.
Also, the state government has decided to abolish GO No. 111 as the people of 84 villages have long demanded it. They are against the government, which has stripped them of any development rights in the area. They will now be exempt from all restrictions on land use. The city is now able to draw enough drinking water from major sources such as Godavari, Krishna and Manjeera.
As part of the measures taken to tackle the water pollution problems affecting Gandipet and Himayat Sagar, ring pipes and sewage treatment plants will be installed soon. The city’s water sources, including Musi, Gandipet and Himayat Sagar, will be linked to the supply of the Kaleshwaram project, which will lift water from Godavari to Kondapochamma Sagar. The road connecting Shankarpalli and Chevella will be widened from 150 feet to 200 feet.
Hussain Sagar will also be linked with Godavari’s supplies. The move aims to remove polluted water from all water sources and fill them with Godavari water. The Chief Minister directed the officials of the relevant departments to make the necessary plans and designs for this purpose.
