Telangana HC allows BJP to protest in Dharna Chowk

Hyderabad: Telangana High Court Judge B Vijaysen Reddy on Friday directed the Hyderabad City Police to allow the Telangana BJP to perform “Maha Dharna” at Dharna Chowk in Indira Park from 10 am to 5.30 pm.

However, the judge directed the petitioner, Premendar Reddy, to provide the police with details of BJP ministers and state leaders involved in the event by 9pm on Friday. The judge also warned that provocative speech would be dealt with legally, while limiting the number of participants to a maximum of 500 at any point in time.

The arguments put forward by the police — that the protest would cause traffic jams, inconvenience patients at nearby hospitals, and disorderly conduct by lawless elements — were dismissed by the judge as baseless. So, he took up the case.

Opinion polls by local agencies

On Friday, the High Court division judges comprising Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice N Tukaramji wanted to know from the State Election Commission (SEC) when they will conduct elections for local bodies in the state.

The judge is dealing with the PIL case brought by R Baskar seeking directions for elections for about 6,000 posts, including 300 gram sarpanches, 300 upa sarpanches, 9 ZPTCs and 5,329 constituency members.

The bench notified the SEC and Commissioner Panchayat Raj and adjourned the case until April 27 to allow them to respond.
