Hyderabad: To develop the habit of independent reading in students, the Department of School Education will roll out a unique ‘Patanotsavam’ (reading movement) concept in public and regional schools starting June 26.
As part of the campaign, which will run for more than a month, schools have been instructed to allocate one time each day to a reading session for students in grades one to nine, in addition to ensuring that every child learns to read. According to the directions issued by the school’s educational director, A Sridevasena, for the event, first and second grade students will be encouraged to read simple words and sentences fluently.
During the reading period, students in Class 3 and above should read story books, children’s literature, newspapers, etc. from the library in addition to the courses of various subjects.
Before the reading practice begins, teachers are asked to read the topic and list important words on the board as part of model reading. Then the teachers and students read aloud together and the students read aloud individually. They have to read storybooks in Telugu, Hindi and Urdu for three days, followed by three days in English. In addition, during the morning meeting, we will extend the time for two or three days to read story books.
In order to carry out reading activities, the school will establish a library committee. In elementary school, a committee of five children will be formed, while each class in grades six to nine will form a library committee.
As part of the state’s ten-year celebration, the department recently installed libraries in 5,000 public schools. In addition, the reading corner of the school is also equipped with story books, magazines, newspapers, word lists, etc.
For reading activities, schools have also been asked to hold competitions and a library celebration week between July 10-15.
