Hyderabad: Innovative programs undertaken by the state government to improve healthcare facilities for pregnant women has placed Telangana among the best Indian states in healthcare parameters.
The November report of the Sample Registration Survey (SRS) shows that Telangana ranks top three in South India for Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and top two in South India.
Nationally, Telangana has an MMR (maternal mortality per 100,000 live births) of 43, second only to Kerala and Maharashtra, while in South India it ranks second to Kerala In second place after that, Kerala has an MMR of 19, said the SRS report issued by the Government Registration Department of India.
The report also clearly states that Telangana has outperformed all BJP-ruled states, which are at the bottom with relatively high maternal mortality rates, even compared to the national average of 97 maternal deaths.

The decline in MMR since statehood has been dramatic. In 2014, Telangana’s MMR was around 92 and it has now dropped to 43. “While India has reduced MMR by only 25%, Telangana has reduced by 53% from 92 in 2014 to 43 in 2020. We rank third in overall MMR reduction in India,” Health Minister T Harish Rao said on Tuesday.
He attributed the result to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s unique plan to take care of maternal health. “The SRS report is an endorsement of visionary plans such as the Chief Minister’s KCR toolkit. The BJP-ruled state has often driven twin-engine growth but is still lagging behind, while Telangana continues to look after its people by prioritizing public health,” said Harish Rao.
