Hyderabad: Amid the ongoing internal strife within the BJP Telangana division, a change of guard appears likely, with the party’s central leadership seriously considering replacing incumbent Bandi Sanjay at the behest of a slew of senior party leaders. It is learned that the party may announce the name of the new BJP unit chief in the next three to four days.
According to party sources, BJP national chairman JP Nadda, union home minister Amit Shah and national general secretary BL Santosh discussed the matter in Delhi for four to five days and reportedly decided to replace Sanjay with a more acceptable leader. . Although Sanjay has the support of the top ranks of the party, especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Shah, the party leadership has no choice but to remove him as dissent in the party continues to grow.
Sanjay completed his three-year term as state president in March and was extended until next year as the leadership wants him to lead the party in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
However, after the Karnataka collapse, the BJP leadership seems to have decided not to take risks and is therefore considering the recommendations of its senior leaders in Telangana and making changes accordingly. A senior party leader said the party could not afford to vote and win with a divided House, so the state’s parliamentary vote is only a few months away and it is grappling with all the issues.
“The immediate task of the high command is to gather its flock in the state,” he said.
Meanwhile, although Huzurabad MLA Eatala Rajender, who has opposed Sanjay since joining the party, is considered the frontrunner for the top job, party sources said the leadership wanted him to head the campaign committee so he could be at the grassroots level.
The leadership is said to be more inclined to hand over power to the party’s national vice-president DK Aruna. According to party sources, the decision to appoint the Aruna party chief came after the BJP Telangana chief conducted a poll of leaders and cadres in all districts. Italah Rajand, who has been camping in the nation’s capital since the past two days, is understood to have been informed of the party high command’s decision, which he has reportedly agreed to. The party leadership has summoned senior state sector leaders to Delhi to inform them of the decision to replace Sanjay, the source said, adding that the party is likely to announce the name of the new leader in the next three to four days.
Bandi Sanjay’s work style and habit of not trusting his superiors before making a decision is also said to have caused him problems, with many superiors calling for his replacement.
