In terms of the state government’s outstanding debt to the gross domestic product (GSDP), Telangana recorded 27.4% at the end of March 2022, ranking fifth in the country.
Hyderabad: Telangana’s total outstanding debt has dropped sharply from 18.7% in 2018-19 to 16.7% in 2021-22, indicating the fiscal health of the state’s economy. In terms of the state government’s outstanding debt to the gross domestic product (GSDP), Telangana recorded 27.4% at the end of March 2022, ranking fifth in the country.
Other states with low outstanding debt relative to their respective GSDPs by end-March 2022 are Maharashtra (20%), Gujarat (21.4%), Karnataka (25.7%) and Ori Saban (26%).
Union Finance Minister of State Pankaj Chaudhary presented the latest report on the outstanding debts of the states and the federal government in the Lok Sabha on Monday. However, the union minister did not answer a question from the BRS MP as to whether any state including Telangana had exceeded the allowed rationing debt (FRBM limit) since 2014.
As a result, Telangana’s outstanding liabilities increased from Rs 16 trillion in March 2018 to Rs 312 trillion in March 2022. However, the annual growth rate of outstanding liabilities has gradually declined from 18.7% in 2018-19 to 16.7% in 2021-22 in Telangana.
The country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased to Rs 236.65 trillion from Rs 124.68 trillion in 2014-15, while the country’s total debt/liabilities increased to Rs 1388.7 crore from Rs 624.44 trillion in 2014-15 2021-22. As a result, the center’s total liabilities amount to 58.7% of national GDP in 2021-22.
