Hyderabad: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC), which has been trying to be profitable while not burdening bus users through a multi-pronged strategy, may be forced to raise bus fares due to a number of factors.
In view of the recent increase in toll gates on national highways and the steady increase in fuel prices, Taiwan Railways is exploring the possibility of raising bus fares. From April 1, the central government revised the tollgate charges to 5.5%.
Therefore, motorists have to pay an additional Rs 5 on top of every Rs 100 as toll. In April last year, authorities also raised fees by 8% to 15%. In fact, the central government raises the toll rates at toll booths every April.
As such, RTC authorities are monitoring toll plaza charges based on demand on specific routes and other factors, and are said to be considering whether bus fares can be increased while minimizing the burden on citizens and regular bus users.
Once the review is complete, senior officials from the RTC are expected to meet and make a decision on the bus fare increase accordingly.
An additional fee of at least Rs 4 is expected to be charged per passenger passing through the toll gate on city regular buses and Garuda Plus buses in the form of toll gate charges, company sources said.
Likewise, passengers can be charged between Rs 15 and Rs 20 per passenger for the recently introduced air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned sleeper buses.
