This Italian town fines people who take selfies

Hyderabad: Tourists typically roam the city and take hundreds of selfies in an attempt to capture the moment. Especially since many of these places have the most Instagram-friendly backgrounds. However, for local residents, it may be uncomfortable to see many of them walking around with such phones.

In one Italian town, the discomfort is so great that authorities have decided to fine tourists for selfies. Portofino, a sleepy town on the Italian Riviera, is now reportedly introducing no-waiting areas to prevent tourists from spending a lot of time taking photos at certain tourist spots.

This is to keep the flow of tourists going. Authorities can impose a fine of up to 275 euros (Rs 24,861) if someone fails to comply with these conditions and stays for an extended period of time.

The town’s mayor, Matteo Viacava, said tourists lingering around just to take pictures had created “anarchic chaos,” leading to traffic jams and congested streets, the BBC reported.

The no-wait zone will be open from morning until 6pm. The restrictions were introduced over the Easter weekend and are in effect until October.
