Calcutta: Three people were killed in an explosion near the ancestral home of the opposition leader in Suvendu Adhikari, the West Bengal assembly in East Midnapole district.
The explosion happened late on Friday night, hours before a scheduled rally by Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress national secretary and party MP.
The incident took place at the home of Trinamool Congress booth chairman Ramkumar Manna, who also died at his home.
Two others killed in the blast were identified as Debkumar Manna, a cousin of Rajkumar and Biswajit Gayen.
Two other people were seriously injured in the explosion and were rushed to a local hospital in the neighboring West Midnapole district, according to local police sources.
Questions have been raised about lapses in security arrangements, especially since the entire area has been cordoned off by police since Friday due to a rally by Abhishek Banerjee. A large police force cordoned off not only the area where the National Secretary of Congress of Trinamool was holding the rally, but also the ancestral home of the opposition leader to prevent any mishaps during the rally.
The police have been completely tight-lipped about the possible cause of the explosion. However, political slander has begun the tragic events.
According to Rabindranath Maiti, a local BJP lawmaker from the Bhagabanpur parliamentary constituency, the explosion occurred because explosives used to make crude bombs were stored at Manna’s residence.
“Some local governments tried to cover up the whole thing,” McGrady said.
However, Trinamool Congress’ state secretary and party spokesman Kunal Ghosh denied the allegations and claimed that local BJP militants were responsible for the blast, creating tension in the region ahead of Abhishek Banerjee’s rally.
“In the past few days, the BJP has been trying to create tension in the area. Their leaders, accompanied by personnel from the Central Armed Forces, tried to carry explosives in the area,” Ghosh said.
