Villupram: The death toll from a counterfeit alcohol incident in Tamil Nadu’s Vilupuram district has risen to eight, police said on Monday morning, with two others dying while being treated in hospital.
As a result, the death toll from drinking fake alcohol has risen to 12 in two separate incidents in the state.
As many as 10 people died in the state’s Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts on Sunday after allegedly drinking fake alcohol.
In Maduranthagam, Chengalpattu district, four people died – two on Friday and a couple on Sunday, allegedly from illegal drinking.
Inspector-General of Police (Northern) N Kannan said on Sunday that the victim may have consumed alcohol that was reported to contain a mixture of ethanol-methanol and other chemicals.
He said there was no evidence of a link between two separate deaths of counterfeit alcohol reported in northern Tamil Nadu, but police were investigating.
“Two incidents of counterfeit alcohol have been reported, one in Chengalpattu district and the other in Villupuram district. Inspector General Kannan gave details of the incident in Chengalpattu district, saying: “In the morning, Chithamur in Chengalpattu district reported a case where two people from a family died. A suicide attempt as a result of a family dispute, but after observing their symptoms, we suspected it was an incident of fake alcohol.”
“The area has since been alerted. Two more people were later admitted to hospital with similar symptoms. A total of four people died and a fifth person is being treated. Police have conducted an autopsy and arrested a man named Ammavasai in connection with the incident. defendant.”
