sangaredi: Power supply was cut for 10 minutes in most of three districts on Monday to rescue a pigeon teetering on the KPHB high voltage power line in Hyderabad.
In this unique rescue operation, TS Transco officials, at the request of the Animal Warriors Conservation Society, cut off the power supply in Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri and most of Hyderabad so that the society can save rescuers from electric shocks. The circumstances under which the pigeon was rescued were shocked.
According to Pradeep Nair, the founder of the Ameenpur-based association, they received a call from some animal lovers at 2pm on Monday and a team rushed to the scene. Because it’s a 133-kilovolt line, Nair said it put rescuers at risk.
AWCS Santoshi members said they then contacted the office of Transco chairman and managing director D Prabhakar Rao. After high-level discussion and negotiation, most areas of the three places were cut off for 10 minutes.
AWCS hired a boom lift for Rs 6,000 per hour to rescue the bird and since it was healthy it was immediately released to its roost. Santoshi said the pigeon’s leg became entangled in a discarded thread.
While it was sitting on the wire, the wire got stuck to the wire when the pigeon tried to fly away. While the actual rescue was completed within 10 minutes, the entire process took nearly six hours, she said, noting that resources including lifts had to be mobilized.
Once they managed to get in touch with Transco’s top brass, things moved faster and the real rescue was done.
AWCS members Sanjeev Dasa, Sanjeev Verma, Romina, Ganesh and Niranjan also participated in the operation.
