Some users believe that the assignment of blue tick marks to the platform’s own version of verified accounts is hindering the idea of virtual equality.
Hyderabad: Tesla CEO Elon Musk completed the $44 billion acquisition of Twitter on Friday, tweeting: “The bird has been released.”
Hours after the news hit the Internet, Twitterati made a request to Twitter’s new boss. Some users believe that the assignment of blue tick marks to the platform’s own version of verified accounts is hindering the idea of virtual equality.
Through #Remove_all_BlueTicks, users are asking Musk to remove the practice of providing blue ticks to individuals on the platform.
Dilip Mandal, a journalist who loves the blue tick himself, tweeted: “Please support: Dear @elonmusk, Twitter #BlueTick is unequal, discriminatory, hierarchical and arbitrary. It Segregation in the conversation. It’s also against internet equality. Please replace the system. #Democratise_Verification #Remove_all_BlueTicks.”
“Freedom of speech is not enough. We need equality in the conversation. Let everyone have it. Check their credentials,” he added.
While some users have called for the blue ticks to be dropped because the process for assigning them is undemocratic, others believe their existence is crucial.
“Bluetick is used to identify who is a real celebrity/famous person or who is a fake account. If the blue tick is removed, then how do we know who is real and who is fake (sic),” argued one user.
Another angry user wrote: “Obviously this country has no other better work. Going to do something useful to help the country. Ignore all the important things happening in this country and worry about blue ticks. Like Elon Flowers $44 billion to follow your advice.”
