Hyderabad: A month-long protest by wrestlers calling for the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan on sexual harassment charges took an unexpected turn when Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi dodged media questions on the matter. The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media platforms on Wednesday.
When the media approached Lekhi for her opinion, she was seen briskly walking away, eventually running to her car, saying “Chalo, chalo, chalo” (let’s go, let’s go, let’s go). A media reporter chased after her, determined to ask her what she thought of the protesting wrestlers. The question posed to Lekhi was, “What do you think of protesting wrestlers?”
In response, Lekhi simply said, “The legal process is ongoing.” The incident happened before the wrestlers arrived in Haridwar on Tuesday, adding to the significance of their month-long demonstrations. It is important to note that the wrestlers have been protesting for over a month and have resumed after the Delhi Police delayed registering the FIR against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan.
The wrestlers’ decision to dip their hard-won medals into the Ganges as a symbolic gesture on Tuesday fueled their protests. However, the situation took a dramatic turn when farmer leader Naresh Tikait arrived on the scene and took the medal from the protesters. He promised to address their demands within five days.
Responding to the incident in Uttarakhand, WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan said that the Delhi police are already investigating the matter and there is nothing more that can be done.
He said, “Aage aage dekhiye hota hai kya” (Let’s see what happens in the future). He also admitted that the FIR was filed based on the wrestler’s complaint. On the wrestlers’ decision to hand over their medals to Tekett instead of dipping them in the Ganges, Ciaran said, “That’s their position. My term is over. If I’m found guilty, I’ll be arrested. What’s wrong with that? ?”
