Kansas City: Two people were killed and a third was injured Friday night in a shooting by a Kansas City police officer, but few details were immediately released.
The shooting happened shortly before 9 p.m. when a police officer called for help near a McDonald’s restaurant in east Kansas City.
Missouri Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Responding officers found five people and an officer near a white van whose three passengers were shot, Andy Bell said.
A black man was seriously injured and died at the scene. A white woman died after being taken to the hospital. The third victim suffered minor injuries. Two others were detained. The officer was not injured.
Investigators are trying to determine what happened before the officer radioed for help and whether anyone other than the officer fired the shots, Bell said. A handgun was found at the scene.
“There’s not a lot of information we can share,” Bell said Friday night. “The investigation is at a very, very early stage.” The victim’s name and age were not immediately released.
